The Hill & Moorland Leader Award has established itself as the award for those taking groups out in Hill & Moorland areas of the UK and benefits from Mountain Training's tried and tested training and assessment structure to give leaders a great foundation in what they do. Outlook Adventures runs both training and assessment courses for the Hill & Moorland Leader Award.

The Hill and Moorland Leader scheme enables experienced hill walkers to lead groups on day walks in the hills and moorlands of the United Kingdom and Ireland in summer conditions 

Get away from the paths and enjoy our wild places as a Hill and Moorland Leader. This qualification is ideal for walkers who want to learn the skills required for effective group leadership in the hill and moorland areas of the UK and Ireland. 

WHO IS IT FOR?

Courses are ideal for anyone who wishes to lead groups of people in Hill & Moorland areas of the UK. The course is of particular relevance to those who lead:

• Local walking clubs or groups.

• Volunteers for societies or organisations leading walks.

• Teachers involved with DofE expedition groups.

• As a Qualification in the outdoor industry.

To get started on the Hill and Moorland Leader qualification you need to meet the following prerequisites:

• You must be at least 18 years old
• You should have at least a year’s worth of experience of hill walking
• You should have an interest in leading groups in the hills
• You must be a member of a mountaineering council: BMC, Mountaineering Scotland or Mountaineering Ireland.

Hill & Moorland Leaders should be competent in the following key areas, all of which will be covered during your three day training course:

3. Planning and Weather

4. Hazards and Emergency Procedures

5. Equipment

6. Walking styles

7. Navigation 

8. Teaching and Learning Skills

9. Access, Conservation and the Environment

10. Background knowledge

TRAINING:

Hill & Moorland Leader Award Training is a three day course where you will cover the full award syllabus and have plenty of opportunities to put skills into practice and ask questions of your instructor and course mates. We take your experience into account and encourage the sharing of ideas and skills to give you a toolbox to work with in a range of different situations.

ASSESSMENT:

Hill & Moorland Leader Award Assessment is a further three day course following a consolidation period. You will find our assessors friendly and approachable - we aim to make the assessment process as relaxed as possible while seeing what we need to.
